Kids go crazy over crayfish By Sophie Cornish SHIRLEY PRIMARY School pupils had mixed reactions when they were given the opportunity to get up close and personal with crayfish. Teachers Chanelle Gleimius and Alana Cochrane said some children were interested in looking and identifying parts of the crayfish and others were a little “freaked out.” The visit from Theo’s Fisheries was part of inquiry-based literacy lessons about ocean creatures. The year 1 and 2 pupils have learnt about sharks, whales, crabs, seahorses and crayfish.

By Sophie Cornish PLANS TO shift the Rawhiti and Avondale golf courses and merge them in the red zone may be dead in the water. The public was asked by Regenerate Christchurch to give feedback on 10 possible combinations of use for the red zone – including merging Avondale and Rawhiti golf clubs in Bexley. That would leave the way for the land at Rawhiti and Avondale to be used for housing. But, of the more than 1800 responses, less than a quarter mentioned the housing idea. Coastal-Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone does not believe Regenerate will go ahead with the land swap idea. “I think they will listen to the people . . . it’s too contentious and, although housing is my portfolio at council, community well-being is something that belongs to all of us,” Cr Livingstone said. •Turn to page 10

from the editor’s desk THE LOOK and feel of New Brighton is in the balance. On page 1 today we reveal a survey over use of the red zone. A key part is whether Rawhiti Golf Club will move to Bexley and open the way up for housing on its current site. The Rawhiti course is publicly owned and is prime real estate for a developer. The plan would be to merge Rawhiti and Avondale Golf Club at Bexley. But Avondale owns its own land and has new clubrooms. Club members appear to be split on the move. Interesting times. Speaking of which we’ve refreshed our masthead and page 2, and there’s more to changes in the wind. I’ll keep you posted. Barry Clarke

MP joins fight to stop school site sale Bid to keep hall for community use ramps up By Sophie Cornish CHRISTCHURCH East MP Poto Williams may have her first challenge as a part of the new Government – saving the Central New Brighton School site. Pressure is now on Ms Williams to halt the sale of the site, which includes Roy Stokes Hall. It could be sold to private developers. The site is set to go on the market in February. Ms Poto Williams Williams has been in contact with both the minister of education and minister for land information about the issue. “I am hopeful that (Minister of Education Chris (Hipkins) will think about the concerns of the community and realise how well loved the Roy Stokes Hall is within the area.” The hall was built following a large fundraising effort from the community, which spanned more than 15 years.

Coastal-Burwood Ward city councillor David East has another idea to save the school. “A concern is the fact that the Ministry of Education have underestimated the need for a school on this side of town. They amalgamated three of them and Rawhiti is bursting at the seams now and South Brighton is heading that way.” “Going forward, it may well be that we need another school in the not too distant future. Maybe the site needs to be re-developed

for a smaller school.” Land Information New Zealand is currently in the process of organising the site’s sale on behalf of the Ministry of Education. However, Ms Williams said the sale was not yet definite. “There is a chance it could be halted. She has already written to the minister (for land information).” “We are also writing letters to the minister, so it’s all a full community effort,” she said. Ms Williams said there was a wider issue regarding vacant school sites on the east. “We know how tragic it was having the schools closed in the first place – we can see the absolute value of those schools turned into community hubs. I hope that that provides enough reason to show, at least in the shortterm, that it’s the best outcome for the community.” Currently there are demolition plans for the old Aranui High School site as well. In Brief TOOL COULD SAVE LIVES The Coastal-Burwood Community Board has approved a grant for an automated external defibrillator to service Southshore and South New Brighton. The Southshore Residents’ Association requested $2900 for the defibrillator, which will be located at the South New Brighton Holiday Park. There is an automated external defibrillator at South Brighton School, which can be used during school hours, but the next closest option is in New Brighton, where there are six. ROCKABILLY VENUE Rockabilly Show and Shine organiser Robbie Baigent is still waiting on a response from the city council on whether the event will go ahead at Rawhiti Domain next year. Organisers have clashed with the Christchurch Archery Club – which also uses space in the domain – over event dates, noise and health and safety. If the organisers cannot find an acceptable date to hold the event, which attracted more than 8000 people this year, they may have to find a new location. Mr Baigent will make a deputation at the Coastal-Burwood Community Board meeting on Monday about the matter.

Cr East has spoken to Development Christchurch Ltd to see if the city council-owned company can do anything to halt or stop the proposed closure. DCL is responsible for rejuvenating New Brighton. “We are talking with Westpac to see if we can get this decision put off for a while longer, until such time when we can see if the hot salt water pools and the business re-invigoration will impact on the business sector on this side of town,” said Cr East. New Brighton is one of three Westpac branches on the chopping block, along with Lincoln and Sydenham. Westpac says internet and mobile phone banking, as well as the changing population because of the earthquakes, are the reasons behind the planned closures. “Our customers are

increasingly using technology for their banking needs, which is resulting in fewer branch transactions,” said Westpac spokeswoman Heather Shiels. Ms Shiels said online transactions had increased by 66 per cent in five years, while customers using mobile-only devices had increased from 24 to 39 per cent in the past two years. The earthquakes had also played a role, she said. “Since the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes the region has experienced significant shifts in population, which have impacted where people are

Fireworks display could be changed By Sophie Cornish MAJOR CHANGES could be in store for New Brighton’s annual Guy Fawkes fireworks event. Last week the city council released a survey asking for feedback about the event. Questions included whether the event should be moved to the middle of the year to celebrate Matariki (Maori new year), moved to the nearest weekend to November 5 and/or moved out of New Brighton. City councillor Sara Templeton backs the Matariki idea. “Changing it to a New Zealand celebration from an irrelevant 400-year-old English one would be a great move and hosting it in winter at 6.30pm would be much more inclusive of the younger members of our community,” Cr Templeton said in a Facebook post. Coastal-Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone wants something different all together. “I would like to build the event around celebrating our diversity as a city. We have that diversity in the Coastal-Burwood area with all the different nationalities and cultures.” Cr Livingstone would like to

MARIAN College student Keely Stuart has received a Ngā Mahi-aRinga Pūtaiao Scholarship from Otago University. The fully-funded scholarship will provide the year 11 student the opportunity to participate in a week-long programme during the holidays and experience being a science student on campus. Hands-On is a programme run by the university which encourages young New Zealanders to consider further study as a step in their career pathway. Keely is very excited to be accepted onto the programme. “I’m interested in a career in health, science and physiology so it will be a great opportunity to see what Otago University is like and whether I want to go on to study there,” she said. Hands-On at Otago co-ordinator and science education officer Sandra Copeland said this year a record 560 applications for 400 places were received. The aim of the Ngā Mahi-aRinga Pūtaiao Scholarship is to inspire and motivate young Maori students to develop their science knowledge and skill.

It is with pleasure that I am able to report to our community that Linwood College has had a most positive year. It has been a year of significant thinking and planning as we listen to our community’s input regarding how we should re-develop with our whole-school rebuild. Linwood College is clear-eyed about the forms of education that work for our students and we have this bedrock of understanding through our partnership with our community. Our community views education as the wellbeing of the whole person. All developmentally positive experiences enrich our students’ understanding of whom they are and broaden their outlook. They nurture students’ classroom focus by contextualising their learning and sowing the seeds of positive ambition.

Waitaha Haka Competition Linwood College believes in a ‘pathwayed curriculum’. This means the school, students and families knowing: 1. Students’ learning and skills as they come into LC from our partner primary schools and building on these successes. 2. How the learning at LC connects to what the students want to do when they leave school. “What are my post-school pathways and how does LC help me to achieve these pathways?” In this way learning is meaningful to the individual and strengths-based. At Linwood College the individual matters. Finally, the Education Review Office reviewed Linwood College in the second half of Term 3. The confirmed report is now public and I am delighted to say that the school is back on the three year return cycle. It is a testament to everyone’s collective vision and positive work for our school: Board of Trustees, staff, students, whanau, partner schools and community. Sports Awards Night

Over Labour Weekend, Kimihia Te Matauranga Kapa Haka Group competed at the Waitaha Secondary Schools’ Haka Competition at the Aurora Centre. The group was made up of a combination of students from Linwood College, Christchurch Girls’ High School and three schools from Te Tai Poutini (West Coast), those being Westland College, Greymouth High School and Buller High School. The competition was of a very high standard this year with ten groups competing for a spot at the National Haka Competition in 2018. Kimihia gained placings in the following categories: 1st place in Poi 2nd place in Moteatea/ Traditional Chant 2nd place in Whakawatea/ Exit Song 2nd equal Te Whakahua o te Reo/ Language with Te Pa o Rakaihautu 3rd place in Haka 3rd place in Waiata-a-ringa/ Action Song 3rd place in Waiata Tira/ Choral 3rd place for Hamiora Te Rupe/ Male Leader Kimihia was placed 3rd overall in the competition. We are also very proud of Dayton RapanaPham who was placed 2nd for his Whaikorero/Traditional Speech. Once again, Linwood College’s annual 'Sports Awards' ceremony was a very successful evening. We were lucky enough to have Shane Thrower return to Linwood College as our guest speaker, talking about how sport has impacted his life and the opportunities that it can provide. Richard Edmundson (Principal) and Finlay Laird (Linwood College Board of Trustees member), presented the major awards for the evening. We also had special guests from Christs' College and ARA Institute of Canterbury in attendance. We would like to thank the Linwood College community and Linwood College Board of Trustees for their continuous support as we continue to pursue sporting excellence. Sportsperson of the Year Award: Jeffrey

Jeffrey Taylor has been involved in Special olympics Swimming, Basketball and Football. Jeffrey has competed against swimmers in two Blue ribbon days this year. In April he competed against swimmers from Canterbury, North Canterbury and Mid Canterbury, coming 1st in Freestyle, 2nd in 15m Flutter Board and 2nd in 15m of any stroke. In the Second Blue ribbon Day, Jeffrey came 1st in 25m Breast-Stroke, 2nd in 25m Freestyle, 2nd in 25m Butterfly, and 4th in 25m Freestyle relay.

IVANNIA OSUNA FREGOSO – 2017 Mairehau Scholar

We are extremely pleased to introduce to you, SHILAH NorMAN. Shilah is described by our school staff as a caring, kind, honest and understanding young lady. She has the full trust of staff for any task, being 100% reliable, punctual and honest. Shilah demonstrates maturity and intelligence in her relationships with both peers and adults and is seen by her teachers as a ‘big-picture thinker’ – someone who thinks outside the ‘square’ and beyond the Pegasus Bay coastline to consider and reflect wisely on global issues and solutions. Shilah’s strength in leadership has been demonstrated over the years as she has involved herself in both the Student Council as co-chairperson, and as a member of the Student Executive. Shilah will gladly and willingly take on leadership roles in all areas of school and community involvement. It comes as no surprise that her career intentions are recorded as youth work, counselling or therapy work.

This year Benjamin has been developing his leadership skills, first at a MHErC Communications Skills course, followed by participation in the city-wide World Vision Leadership Conference. He also supported the annual rSA red Poppy Day fundraising appeal. Benjamin has served in the Senior Student Executive (Community and Peer Support) and was a highly reliable and relatable Peer Support Leader. He recently demonstrated leadership in kapahaka performance and was one of only two student presenters at our annual Colours Award ceremony recently.

Ivannia is a young lady who has impressed us all with her quiet, focused purpose and her natural, perceptive intelligence. She has demonstrated her allround effort this year with her considerable commitment. She works hard and complements this with determination and exceptional self-discipline. As an academic, Ivannia has been able to establish and achieve her challenging goals. She has demonstrated an astute understanding of the enquiry and the evaluation, synthesis and time management skills required in Classical Studies, the subtle nuances and communication skills in senior English and her creative abilities and talents flourish in Photography and Music. So far, Ivannia has gained Excellence in every Level 3 standard she has sat this year. She is indeed genuinely talented and has a balanced approach towards her studies and life. We are all extremely proud of her achievements and contributions and wish her well as she embarks on tertiary study next year.

We are sure you’ll be impressed with the quality of the products made. A portion of the profits will be going to charity to give back to our community. our school has four charities that are linked to our four waka (house) groups. Tau Ihu is supporting St Johns, Waka Katea is supporting NZ Blue Light, Tau rapa is supporting Westpac Trust Helicopters, and Waka Ama is supporting Lifeline.

He is an achiever and has a natural aptitude for the sciences, in which he has a deep understanding and exceptional talent. Benjamin is a very competent academic who has always worked to his potential, achieving results at levels in advance of his cohort. Forever helpful and committed, we would also like to acknowledge his contribution to his role in establishing a student mentoring programme with Mairehau Primary School. This year, Benjamin was one of a few students chosen nation-wide to be awarded a scholarship to attend the royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand Conference in Dunedin. Teachers have acknowledged him for his application and analysis skills for report writing in Biology, for his perception and conceptual understanding in Chemistry, for his problem-solving abilities in Physics, for his analytical mathematical skills in Statistics, and for the quality of his formal writing skills in English. They all confirm his maturity of purpose and diligence in managing his schoolwide commitments in preparation for study as an Astrophysicist at Canterbury university in 2018. We are all proud of Benjamin’s contributions to our school and his accomplishments, and we wish him well in his tertiary studies next year.

Creative wrapping adds intrigue to gifts Most of the malls offer a free gift-wrapping service, which is a great help at this busy time, but for those who prefer to wrap their own here are a few ideas to make gifts look unique and exciting.

The first tip to make the job easier and the wrapping look more professional is to do the task on a flat surface – a table or a hard floor. Recycling has become an important aspect of modern-day life, and that’s easy to do with gift-wrapping. For example, those brown paper bags you have put aside are ideal, especially for odd-shaped gifts. To give them a Christmassy look, you could glue on those left-over pieces of wrapping paper from last year that are too small to use, and add a candy cane or chocolate with the gift tag. Another quirky idea is to wrap your gifts in fabric. You could cut up a garment you no longer wear, or look out those left over pieces from curtains or clothing you have made. Tie them up with fabric ribbon to complete the look.

Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as wrapping is another recycling idea, and you could add a festive look by tying them with Christmas ribbon. For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them to look like a Christmas cracker. Place a tube of cardboard around the item, then put it inside a sheet of wrapping paper, secure it with tape then scrunch up the ends like a cracker and tie them off with coloured ribbon. Kitchen foil is another wrapping option. Being silver and shiny it already has a festive look, which you could enhance with bright-coloured ribbon. Make a container, such as a jar, tin or tray one part of the gift. Complete it with chocolates, nuts or biscuits and wrap the gift in clear cellophane tied with brightcoloured ribbon.

Readers respond to last week’s story about the Central New Brighton School site potentially going on the market to private investors Janice Belgrave – Similar issue with the Aranui School site on Breezes Rd. It is about to be demolished, and the is a magnificent community hall on site that needs to be saved. Community groups are trying to save it, but why the heck should they have to go to so much trouble? It should never be considered to be bulldozed, but these decisions were made by the previous Government and are difficult to turn over. So frustrating when perfectly good buildings are lost for no reason. Leah Young – I always knew this was the reason Central New Brighton School closed. The Government can get more money by selling the land than having a school on the site. Carolyn Stirling – The Government could turn these classrooms into senior studio apartments. My friend lives in a converted school in the United States. Kimberley Borell – And yet my grandsons had to move schools three times because of this school closing.

Helen Young – Leave this hall alone. As a community person I’d like to see this stay in the community and not be sold off to developers. As it is, they took away the pool from

the community which they had no right to do as this was a community asset as well. Our community needs to keep this as they closed the school which did not need to be done as they did not loose as many students as they clamed they did. The South New Brighton School should have been closed as they lost a lot more students from South New Brighton, Southshore and Bexley as that was where most of their students moved from. By Sophie Cornish A COMBINATION of community groups are helping low decile pupils get the school camp experience. Year 5 and 6 pupils at Linwood North School recently went on camp to Living Springs with 50 per cent of their fees paid for. The Aorangi Sponsorship Programme coupled with Mitre 10 and Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Interact group raised funds to get the pupils to the camp. The sponsorship programme was set up last year and aims to get underprivileged children an outdoor education experience. Linwood North School principal Sandra Smith said it’s not common for her pupils to go to camp and they are only able to if community funding is available. “The children that went had an amazing time. The thing that stood out for the teachers was that the children who usually find school challenging, really shone and blossomed at camp and took on the challenges,” said Ms Smith. Living Springs CEO Denis Aldridge said that 50 per cent of schools going to the camp are decile 9 and 10. Schools that are decile 1,2,3 and 4 combined only make up 16

per cent. “That’s the very schools who need to be here,” said Mr Aldridge. Some “business clusters” are now sticking with the schools long term and sponsoring camps every year, said Mr Aldridge. Last year, six low decile schools were able to attend the camp from community sponsorship. The programme is aiming for eight schools next year. The camps are based on outdoor adventure learning programmes which include low ropes courses, tree climbing, farm visits and biking. “It gets them out of their comfort zone, gets them working together and gets them in a wholesome green environment,” said Mr Aldridge.

LAMB SALAD WITH BLACKBERRIES AND AVOCADO Ingredients 600g of lamb 1 serving oil spray 2 tsp dry mixed herbs 130g mesclun leaves, with herbs 16-20 blackberries 1 large avocado, halved, stoned and sliced ½ cup balsamic vinaigrette Directions Trim the lamb and snip the

edges, if required. This will prevent the lamb from curling during cooking. Spray with the oil. Combine the mixed herbs and black pepper and rub onto the lamb. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30min. Return to room temperature before cooking. Barbecue, grill or pan-fry for 3-6min each side, depending on thickness. Combine the salad greens, blackberries and avocado in a salad bowl. Thinly slice the lamb and toss with the salad and dressing.

HOW TO COOK LAMB LEG CHOPS ON THE BARBECUE Ingredients

1/4 cup white vinegar 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 brown onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 1kg lamb leg chops

Mix together the vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, onion and olive oil in a large resealable bag until the salt has dissolved. Add lamb, toss until coated and marinate in refrigerator for two hours.

Preheat a barbecue or the grill to medium high. Remove lamb from the marinade and leave any onions that stick to the meat. Discard any remaining marinade. Cook chops for about 3-4min each side for medium or until cooked as desired.

AFTER Summer is coming! That means busy times at the Shirley Tennis Club as its season of competition and social tennis gets underway. The club has new post-quake facilities in the beautiful surroundings of Richmond Park and is keen to welcome new members, whether new to the sport or experienced tennis players. The club offers coaching opportunities, great new facilities and chances to enjoy tennis in a local, friendly, family-oriented environment. The club’s address is 102 Woodchester Ave. In these days of roadworks and detours, the best vehicle access is to turn into Medway St from North Parade and then turn left into Woodchester Ave; plenty of carparking is available. Contact phone number is 03 385 9531. The Shirley Tennis Club has been a part of the sporting scene in Richmond since 1925. The devastating earthquakes in 2011 saw damage to all nine courts and the clubrooms; worse than any other tennis club in Christchurch. This damage essentially took the club out of action for a summer season, but the club has bounced back with the full replacement of all courts and the clubrooms by 2017. The club is in the final phase of what will be a $1 million investment that has taken place over the past six years. This investment has largely been funded through grants from charitable trusts and club fundraising, with a huge amount of voluntary effort from members at numerous working bees. The end result is a fantastic 9-court facility (including four courts that are floodlit) combined with brand-new clubrooms, making a collective

package that is compelling for the eastern Christchurch tennis scene. The club has constructed courts on the old Shirley Bowling Club site, and has given its two back courts (closest to the old Marian College site) to the Richmond Workingmen’s Club cricket section who will use this space for training and storage facilities. Shirley Tennis Club is the fourth largest tennis club in Canterbury and is now keen to focus on promoting the club and facilities, and increasing membership levels. The club has recently appointed a new head coach following the departure of the long-standing coach due to a family illness. Matthew Woolman, who has recently returned from a USA tennis scholarship, will take over the role and be in charge of Team Coaching, Hot Shots for new junior players and Cardio Tennis and Tennis Xpress programmes for adults. Shirley Tennis Club has been fortunate in having so many keen members who have helped in many ways to keep the club in such good condition. The new tennis season began in August and the club is keen for new and returning members to come along and enjoy the great game of tennis in our facilities. The family-oriented club has strong focus on junior members. Subscription levels remain very affordable, being cheaper than most clubs in Christchurch, with an active committee that ensures smooth operation and a friendly atmosphere. Shirley supports organised play and coaching through all twelve months of the year, whilst also playing host to a variety of competitive and social events, which collectively include all aspects of our membership in club life.

Local plumbers offering free checks on clay pipes While it is now almost seven years since the Christchurch earthquakes, damage to underground pipes is still becoming apparent, says the team at Laser Plumbing Christchurch East, who are based in Ferrymead. As they point out, homeowners can be completely unaware that they have earthquake damage to their clay pipes. Properties built before the 1970s are most likely to have clay pipes, and cracks in the pipes allow tree roots to enter and block drains. The damage can take some time to become apparent but when it does, it is usually fairly major, and costly to repair. Specialists in drain-laying and plumbing, Laser Plumbing are currently offering a free check on pipes. This involves a quick look with a camera, and if any damage is found they will discuss this with the owner. Laser Plumbing are experts in

dealing with EQC and know how to make the process easy. The next step is to provide a drainage survey report to EQC, who in most cases, will cover the cost of this as well as replacing the damaged pipes. There are some conditions, which Laser Plumbing will discuss with the homeowner. “We have done hundreds of surveys and have been installing a lot of replacement PVC pipes over recent years,” says Carol McCann, who owns the company with her husband Chris Dick. “We want to make it easy for people by

offering the check at no cost, and we urge people to get their pipes checked sooner rather than later as we do not know how long EQC will cover repairs for home-owners.
